What is Opdivo?
Opdivo (Nivolumab) is a revolutionary immunotherapy medication that works by harnessing the body’s immune system to fight cancer. It belongs to a class of drugs known as immune checkpoint inhibitors and is used in the treatment of various types of cancer, including melanoma, lung cancer, kidney cancer, and more.
How does Opdivo work?
Opdivo works by blocking the activity of specific proteins known as immune checkpoint molecules, such as PD-1 (programmed death receptor-1). These proteins play a role in suppressing the immune system’s ability to recognize and attack cancer cells. By inhibiting these proteins, Opdivo helps to restore and enhance the immune system’s response to cancer cells, leading to improved tumor control.
Benefits of Opdivo:
- Improved Cancer Treatment: Opdivo has shown remarkable success in treating various types of cancer, both as a standalone treatment and in combination with other therapies.
- Extended Survival: Opdivo has been proven to extend overall survival rates in patients with advanced stages of cancer, offering hope and improved outcomes.
- Reduced Side Effects: Opdivo generally has a favorable side effect profile compared to traditional chemotherapy, making it a well-tolerated treatment option for many patients.
